Three Words My Son Said That I Will Not Forget
Last week, on the drive home from a follow-up appointment, my son said something I have been carrying around all week.
We were stopped at a light. He was looking out the window. He said, very quietly, "I love being."
That was it. "I love being."
I asked him what he meant. He thought about it for a minute. He said, "I love being a boy."
Then he went back to looking out the window.
I have been a cancer mom for almost four years. I have heard my son say a lot of things. "This hurts." "I do not want to." "Can we go home?" "Where is the nurse?" "Is it almost over?" "I am tired." "I love you."
I have not, until last week, heard him say "I love being."
I think that is a sentence that lives in a kid who is off active treatment. A kid who has time and energy and a body that mostly does what he wants it to do. A kid who can look out a car window and notice that being is a thing he loves.
I do not know if he will say it again. I am writing it down here in case.
Three words. From the backseat. On a Tuesday in July. I am writing them down.
