Bringing Joy and Hope this International Childhood Cancer Day
Today, on International Childhood Cancer Day, we pause to honor the courage of children and families affected by cancer. Each year, an estimated 400,000 children and adolescents worldwide are diagnosed with cancer. In the United States, cancer remains the leading disease-related cause of death among children, and every day, about 47 families hear the words, “Your child has cancer.”
At Maxwell’s Toy Box, we know that behind these numbers are real children and families who need support — both emotional and practical. Many survivors face long-term challenges from treatment, and pediatric cancer research receives only a small fraction of federal funding. Awareness and community support are essential to changing this reality.
Supporting Children and Families Through Play
Maxwell’s Toy Box was founded after my 2-year-old son, Max, was diagnosed with leukemia. Our mission is to deliver moments of joy, comfort, and play to children in treatment. Because the diagnosis is just the beginning. Childhood cancer care often lasts years, not months, and while families adjust to a new reality filled with hospital visits and difficult medical decisions, support often fades long before the need does.
A toy is more than a gift — it’s a source of distraction, a reason to smile, and a reminder that children are not alone. Through the generosity of our supporters, Maxwell’s Toy Box brings hope and light to families navigating the challenges of pediatric cancer.
